Belle River man dies in Friday night crash

A 32-year-old Belle River man is dead following a single vehicle rollover in Mount Vernon around 10pm last night. Kings District RCMP said the vehicle was travelling south on Rte 315 when it drifted onto the right shoulder of the road, skidded into the opposing lane of traffic and into the ditch, where it rolled several times. The man was ejected from the vehicle and subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. RCMP are still investigating the cause of the crash. The name of the driver has not been released pending notification of next of kin. ...

Local celebrities will judge Montague High School’s upcoming Battle of the Bands, set to take place next Wednesday, May 29, in the school auditorium. Belfast native and MRHS graduate Colin Buchanan of the well-known Canadian indie rock band Paper Lions will judge. He’ll sit alongside PEI radio station Hot 105.5 disc jockey, Matt MacLeod. Ten bands made up of high school students from across PEI will showcase their talent at the event, with the furthest traveling from Kensington to take part in the friendly competition. Quick thinking on the part of staff at Shooting Stars Daycare in Montague Wednesday prevented a more serious situation when an unattended truck rolled through a service station parking lot. “None of the children were hit by the truck,” daycare owner Kimberly Hicken said, “They are taught to hold hands and when the staff went to get them out of the way, a couple of them fell because they didn’t let go of the other children’s hands.” The four year olds who were walking in a group of six were on their way to Sobey's to buy dough to make cookies ...

The fishermen’s protest is all but over but Cardigan business owner Mary Van den broek said she is still prepared to offer up to 20 weeks of work to anyone in the fishing industry who comes up short to qualify for EI. Ms Van den broek owns Cardigan Feed and she’s hoping other businesses will follow suit. South side lobster fishermen reluctantly joined their north side counterparts on the water Wednesday, ending a week long protest over unfair lobster prices. Until Monday, most fishermen had tied up their boats in protest of $2.75 to $3.25 per pound lobster prices, an amount lower than other provinces and one that some fishermen say is 25 years old. At the end of April, market lobsters from Cole Harbour to Digby sold for $5 to $5.50, and Newfoundland markets sold for $4.21, according to the Department of Fisheries. Some parents at Donagh Regional School don’t want their school changed from a K-9 school to a K-6 because it would mean some children would have to travel to Stonepark in Charlottetown. A meeting with trustees from the English Language School Board, parents, and Home & School committee members at Donagh Regional was held Monday night to discuss a recommendation from the school board to to rezone Donagh. The Eastern Graphic had some impressive wins at the 41st Better Newspaper Awards, held last weekend in Halifax. Sharon Riley, who was jointly nominated by Graphic publisher Paul MacNeill and the Montague Rotary Club, won the award for Outstanding Sales Person and took home a $250 prize. Ms Riley also won the award for Best Original Advertising Idea for a promotion of the Ferguson-Logan Funeral Home. “It’s nice to be recognized,” Ms Riley said. “But it’s a group effort here. Souris High students Matthew Birt, Courtney Dill and Katie Flynn were named Athletes of the Year at their school’s annual awards banquet last week. Female Athlete of the Year honours were shared by Courtney and Katie. Matthew Birt, a Grade 12 student, plays soccer, badminton, rugby and Midget A hockey. Cheers erupted from parents and teachers last Wednesday when they heard Souris Consolidated would receive $84,000 from Indigo’s Love of Reading grant. “This is beyond big news for us,” Shelly Keenan, co-chair of the Souris Consolidated Home and School Foundation, said, still beaming from the news. “We’re very much in need of more books and more technology around books.” Over the next three years, money will go to investing in classroom libraries, getting boys more interested in reading books, purchasing e-readers, and updating the school library.
