Letters to the Editor

Dramatic centralization of health care across PEI

I read with interest Managing Editor Cindy Chant’s comments in “Summerside Welcome to the West Prince Club” (September 19, 2012) wherein it is recognized that the continuing deterioration of services outside the Captial City region expands at an escalating pace. This is best evidenced in the western half of the province. The recent acknowledgement by Minister Currie and Health PEI that surgical services “after hours” will not be available at the Prince County Hospital is proof positive of the health delivery plan at the Ivory Tower and within the senior ranks of the Department of Health. ...

Decline of health services

I read the article “Summerside welcome to the West Prince Club” Sept 19. If my memory serves me it is West Prince who should join the Summerside Club. The slope that started the decline of health services in Prince County was the removal of addiction services from Summerside to Mount Herbert.  I attended a public meeting at the Jubilee Theatre years ago.  I still believe West Prince made a big mistake by not accepting a new hospital which the Conservatives wanted to build. I got in a car accident when I was a kid and I had my bell rung. I ...

Think together as a region

I am writing regarding the editorial piece entitled “Summerside welcome to the West Prince Club” that I read online published in the September 19, 2012 edition of The West Prince Graphic.  You make a number of very good points in your article and I can appreciate the struggles the residents of West Prince have waged in trying to protect health care services in their area.  As you have indicated Prince County Hospital is now facing the same challenge.  ...

Save services at PCH

To all resident of Prince County from North Cape to the further most boundary of all the people that access services at Prince County Hospital. I would encourage everyone to come together to support the efforts of saving our 24 hour emergency services there. I know many of you have accessed this service.  ...

Closure of emergency services tragic for Western Islanders

I am greatly saddened at the current state of affairs within our province,  and the decisions that continue to be made at the extreme and tragic cost to local rural Islanders.  Last spring, hundreds of casual employees were told last minute they had no employment, seniors were told they would be paying increased cost for ambulance services, families told they would have no support in dealing with their children’s challenges, struggling youth were told they no longer had youth workers, students unable to learn within classroom settings were told they would be sent back to the classroom, and schools would ...

Stripping services from PCH – not an option

I am writing to express my sincere concern regarding Governments recent proposal to strip after hour emergency surgeries from Prince County Hospital.  Frankly, I am concerned about any reduction in healthcare services that puts lives at risk. As a long term resident of Summerside, volunteer in the community and the past president of the Prince County Hospital Foundation I believe this to be yet another blow to the residents of Prince County. As a volunteer, I was part of the capital campaign team that raised the funds necessary to equip our beautiful new facility in 2004. We didn’t use our ...

Dirty side to tobacco lawsuit

The province of PEI has launched a lawsuit against the tobacco companies.  The province has to publicly declare about Family Court Counselling facilitating custody of children to parents who smoke cigarettes.  PEI Supreme Court Justice Cheverie has to publicly declare why he allowed Family Court Counselling to facilitate custody of children to parents who smoke cigarettes while he was Attorney General.  Former PEI Supreme Court Chief Justice Kenneth MacDonald has to declare which judges on the PEI Supreme Court would allow a person to claim cigarettes as an expense  There is a dirty side to the tobacco lawsuit nobody wants ...

The real cost soaked up by fishing

Above the din of large Maine lobster catches, plant demonstrations and low fall lobster prices, a fundamental exchange of information is required for us to fully understand the challenges that our lobster fishery on Prince Edward Island is facing.  This is the real cost of production that many fleets in PEI experience. These are direct costs such as fuel, bait, gear, vessel repairs and insurance along with a number of other fishing related expenses.  The last comprehensive analysis of these costs was completed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) in 2004. This study was based on $5.34 a pound for ...

Reconsidering Island resident status

After listening to Wes Sheridan blathering on about how good the HST will be for Islanders and telling everyone that only those with an income of over $50,000 will be affected by it, I decided to find out just how many tax payers that would be.  Keeping in mind he has promised tax rebates for all those under the magic $50,000 mark. ...

EI spin quite an insult

Well, As of now everyone who uses employment insurance or unemployment as it is locally known, has gotten their notice letter from Service Canada regarding part-time work while on unemployment. They made it look as though their new formula is good for part-time workers. This is the worst thing that could have happened to seasonal workers who try to get some part time work while they are off in the winter. They didn’t lie. They just gave it a spin, (Showed you the best case). The reality is that they are taking half of what you make while working part-time, ...

Tax rates out of line

I entirely agree with the letter from Mr Fleck in your July 31 edition. These tax rates in PEI are way out of line compared to other provinces. It may be of interest to Mr Fleck and the public to know that the cause was a policy change initiated by the Premier Binns,Provincial Treasurer Mella Government,at great bureaucratic expense,in the late 1990’s. At that time, my provincial tax equalled about 59 per cent of the federal tax; by 2011 that had increased to 88 percent of federal tax. ...

Look to the Danes for solutions

In PEI, renewable energy projects are still controversial.  However, by imposing these projects on PEI communities (like in Hermanville), our government is only making the acceptance of wind and solar power more difficult.  And that is disappointing because PEI has great potential for both solar power and wind power.  Also, it is in PEI’s best interest to reduce its carbon emissions since we are extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.  But, you can’t fight human nature: nobody likes to have anything forced upon him or her.  So, if PEI is to exploit its “green energy” potential, Island communities need ...

Wake up Canadians

I appreciated Jack MacAndrew’s editorial “Prisoners of Their Own Climate” in the June 6 West Prince Graphic. Instead of “His Mitness” for Romney, I’d propose “His Witless.” And for “nitwittedness, “what about “Mittwittedness”? I adore puns, and those both fit to a T this presidential “hopeful” (what about “hope-less”?) But seriously, folks, I’ve been a wanabee Canadian since I spent a tour in Ottawa back in the early 1980s as a young diplomat at the U.S. Embassy. What I loved about Canada was precisely the difference in its fundamental values and perspective. ...

HST is wrong on all levels

Dear Editor: While there is absolutely no doubt that the tourism industry is not fairly treated under the current PST system, this is easily addressed without selling off our future rights to Ottawa. It makes sense that hotels not pay PST when they make purchases that will be used to generate taxable revenues. Purchases of sheets, towels and amenities should not be taxed because they are being ‘sold’ to the hotel guests and these guests are paying the PST. TIAPEI and the Finance Department could sit down and figure out how to best restructure the current system for this vital industry. ...

Honouring the country we live

I was pleased and proud when the Government of Canada, represented by Federal Revenue Minister Gail Shea, donated the sum of $23,000 to the Acadian Museum in Miscouche, PEI. I will be equally pleased and proud when the Acadian Museum decides to fly the Canadian flag on the building housing the museum and to fly it proudly according to internationally accepted Flag Protocol. Gary Naylor,                                                                           ...

Bob Rae - step down with grace

The poll numbers are out again today and they spell out a clear message for Hon Bob Rae, leader of the federal Liberals of Canada: you’re dragging the party down the tube, so step down in grace, as an honorable man. The Liberal Party of Canada needs a new blood line to lead the party out of the deep hole they’re in if they ever want to gain power in this country once again, in the future. ...

Where has democracy gone?

What the ‘heck’ is going on? Where are the Islanders? Islanders MUST get Angry! Islanders MUST Take a Stand! Where is our democracy gone? What is happening to our Island?   We are being governed by a bunch of ‘Schoolyard Bullies’ – this Liberal government. One of the best ways to handle a “bully” is to take a stand and stand your ground. We MUST stand our ground. Islanders stand up! Do NOT let this government get away with their deceitful and sneaky tactics. We, the people of PEI are their employers! No employee would remain on the job with behavior ...

Government taking us as "idiots"

Wes Sheridan actually said aloud for everyone to hear, anyone making over $55,000 would not feel a thing when the HST is introduced. I am truly offended they (the government) would actually take us to be such idiots. Just after the HST was introduced in BC there was a news release stating after only three weeks HST is worse than anyone could have imagined. BC one of the riches provinces in Canada voted to get rid of the HST the same month one of the smallest and poorest is introducing it. What is wrong with this picture. ...
